It looks like we’ll be using a steel vessel, welded closed. I’ve thought of CDs, DVDs, a difficult steer, or a thumb steer — but they every have drawbacks, not the least of which is outdated technology 25 years from now. Maybe I’ll put a CD and a CD-

Bottom feeders
IN A guest post at Barry Ritholtz' Big Picture site, Mark Thoma gives it to us straight on the latest housing news. First, he says, lots of people have been calling a bottom since, well, since the top. Second, that wrongness doesn't obviate the fact that prices will cease falling eventually, at which point bottom callers will become correct and doubters incorrect. Third, based on prices and inventories, we don't have the support we need to call a bottom, yet. difficult to argue with any of that. In

Fallout from conservative rule: Rising poverty despite economic growth
One of the most important but least frequently told stories about the Bush economy is that it didn't benefit everyone. As a matter of fact, it didn't benefit most of us. Sure, most of the economic indicators rose, but most of the growth happened at the top. Incomes rose exponentially for the very highest wage earners, while everyone else's wages stagnated and the cost of living skyrocketed. The result, as you can imagine, isn't pretty. MinnPost reports: When the 2001 economic recession hit, Min

I have a guest post at The Big Picture on whether housing is anywhere close bottom. The bottom line is: Are we close the bottom? Is the end close? I wish I could answer yes, but I think we have a ways to go yet. Paul Krugman says: When will it every end? The answer is, probably not until 2010 or later. I'm hoping it won't be that long, but so

The Truth Behind U.S. Housing Market Headlines

Investors Upbeat Over Better Than Expected Durable Goods Data at NYSE
The market will most probably end its trading session on 27 August, 2008 with a rally as more investors are going in to buy stocks which had already been seriously sold down last week in light of the credit worries due to the good news of better-than-expected durable goods economic data released just earlier. This could probably obliterate the fact that light, sweet crude price took a climb. It is, therefore, fair to speculate that a substantial broad market recovery on this trading session c...
